The Murph Challenge Training Plan

Completing The Murph Challenge Training Plan is the official way to prepare for The Murph Challenge.

The Murph Challenge is the Official annual fundraiser of the LT. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation. It is also one of the main methods of annually funding the Foundation.

Murph Training Plan

The Murph Workout (The Murph) has developed over a number of years. The original idea was to improve cardiovascular fitness along with other areas to improve battle fitness for marines.

It was LT Michael P Murphy who promoted the ideas and it’s in his name the challenge takes place.

Lt Murphy was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2007

What is Involved in The Murph Challenge Training Plan?

Well, The Murph Challenge Training Plan is a plan over a period before the Actual day to help you prepare for Challenge Day

It is a daily plan which incorporates the routines, slowly at first, to get ready for the main event.

The Murph Workout Consists of The Following Exercises:

  • A One Mile Run
  • 100 Pull Ups
  • 200 Push Ups
  • 300 Squats
  • A One Mile Run
  • All Completed Wearing a 20lb Vest

All of the above exercises are hard enough, but are worse when done against the clock. This is why the Murph Challenge Training Plan takes you along and slowly builds you up.

Whether you are a happy amateur or a fitness addict, this exercise and Murph Training Plan can be suited to you.

You can take it at the pace you want and complete it in the time you want. But, if you are competitive the competition is worldwide. And, the site contains a leader board to help you see how you compare to others.

When and Where is the Challenge?

The Challenge is on every Memorial Day in the USA. (This is the last Monday in May). The Challenge is done everywhere. In homes, in gyms, there are no special conditions for it. Because the Murph has no expensive equipment it can be done in the backyard.

What is The Point of The Challenge?

The simple idea is to raise funds for Service Personnel to help in their education after leaving the Military. And also to educate and inform others about the Military.

An example of this was in 2021, The Murph Challenge Fundraiser raised more than $300,000. It is now finalizing construction on the  LT Michael P Murphy Navy SEAL Museum/Sea Cadet Training Facility, on Long Island.

In addition, the Foundation awarded 34 scholarships in 2021 which included three new scholarships. One is at St. Joseph’s College to a Veteran for undergraduate or graduate study. The others are for  two new scholarships at Rocky Point High School on Long Island. These are in memory of Marine Sgt Robert A. Pole, who was Killed in Action in Iraq.

The Murph Workout fits in well with the philosophy of the Crossfit group of gyms. It is a franchise of more than 1400 gyms worldwide. Instead of fancy equipment it works on core strengths with little or no equipment.

Push ups, pull ups and squats are core exercises. The gyms attract a lot of ex-military people and these are the core of people who partake in the Murph Challenge.

Crossfit has premises all over the world, there may well be a local one near to you.

Good luck with your Murph Challenge Training Plan.
